The SOGIE Guideline provides example definitions of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender. For example, someone in Canada who identifies as a man and is only attracted to other men often considers themselves to be gay, whereas a man who can be attracted to either other men or women often considers themselves to be bisexual. However, these identities may have different meanings to different people based on their life experiences, language, cultural background, and other factors. Some people use pejorative words (link to FAQ) to describe their sexual orientation because they are the only words they are familiar with.
If you’re not sure of your sexual orientation or decide it is different after submitting your refugee claim, you may consider updating your BOC (link) and informing the Board.
